and child. we havthat is irresponsible. it is unpatriotic. >> chris: senator durbin, when candidate obama said that our national debt was $9 trillion. it is now $16 trillion. so the question is if it was unpatriotic at $9 trillion, is it sustainable at $16 trillion? >> chris, here is is the good news. we reduced the long-term deficit by about $2.4 trillion including only $600 billion in new revenue as part of the fiscal cliff. we still have to do more but we have taken the edge off the crisis. i willle concede that. what the president is pointing to is this. we need strong economic recovery. we need to put americans back to work. that is our first priority. deficit reduction i would put as the second priority and one that is coupled with economic growth. so i think we can do both. make sure we have deficit reduction but don't cut too much too fast. take for scamel the sequestration. 700,000 american jobs will be lost. h is not the right time to do it. we have to phase this in and sequence it so we have economic growth and americans paying taxes. that really helps us recover. >> chris: sen
. chris: when we come back, the big question, does washington expect to have to go to war with iran? chris: welcome back. president obama leaves monday nor -- for israel and he said this monday about the theat from iran. >> we would say it would take over a year or so nor -- for iran to actually develop a nuclear weapon but obviously we don't want to cut it too close. chris: which brings us to this week's big question. what do you hear? >> what you hear from the president is him setting a time line in advance of his trip with meeting netanyahu. he knows netanyahu is anxious. he believes it's got to be sooner. he is the one who drew the red line. so he gave them the red line but also extended it. i know some people are going to hear that and say oh, boy -- boy, he said a year. but netanyahu heard at least he's setting one but not the one i want. chris: it's not a note, it's a promise. that's what i hear. >> that's the question. is it a promise? >> i think we are further away from the promise of imminent military action than last summer. what the president has said changes the equation a bit
president obama to nominate, chris? does it come as a particular surprise he's going with a man who is an openly liberal man? >> ideology aside, there is a question of personnel and the question here relates to actually that new black panthers case and other things. we've had an inspector general's report at the attorney general's -- at the department of justice that said that this unit, that mr. perez's unit was basically rent by ideological divisions before and then when a democratic president came in and appointed a very liberal attorney general and a very liberal attorney general put mr. perez in charge of this agency or this sub-group that it didn't get better, that it got worse in some ways, that it was dysfunctional, a reprisal of liberals and what they have seen as excessive conservativism in the bush era and back and forth, and a dysfunctional agency. so there are other people who are less controversial and as i say would share mr. perez's views. and picking perez is sort of like what they did with chuck hagel. they could have found someone who shared chuck hagel's point ev
